Fall Proofing your Gutters
Seven steps to prepare your gutters for fall weather.
Clean your Gutters Properly
Don’t wrap up that hose for the season just yet. Using a proper ladder, give your gutters a good spray down. This will help prep them before the leaves begin to fall.
Inspect your Gutters for Damage
Once your gutters are cleaned out, you can now inspect them for any damages that may have occurred during the summer season. Make sure to look for loose screws, uneven sections, leaks, and sagging.
Repair what is Needed
Make necessary repairs now will help your home in the long run. Leaks can lead to water and debris seeping into the foundation or basement of your home. Fall and winter bring heavy weather like snow and ice, potentially causing severe damage to gutters.
Trim Tree Branches
Branches grow in the summer months and could be directly over your roof or gutters. Once the fall winds pick up, leaves and sticks blow into your gutters, causing clogging issues.
Keep Local Wildlife from Moving In
Colder weather and precipitation can send nature’s furry friends to the higher ground seeking warmth and shelter. The concave of your gutters makes it a cozy spot for nesting. If you are having trouble with some uninvited guests, we recommend our friends at East Tennessee Wild Life Management.

Install Gutter Guards
If heights are not your thing, or you are just tired of getting up on that ladder season after season, consider installing gutter guards. These covers go over the troughs to protect them from fall leaves and debris. They also have pinpoints wide enough to allow water to enter and exit your gutter system properly.
